Since we moved into this house, our "guest room" has gone through endless transformations. The first month we lived here it was just a dumping ground of boxes. Then we finally got around to setting it up with all of the leftover furniture from around the house only to find that it was super crowded. We made small changes, liking finding great curtains from IKEA, finally getting around to making a headboard from a folding screen, and hanging some very functional hooks for all of our coats.
But then, after Christmas I was struck with inspiration and of course, this inspiration has spilled into other rooms in the house since it required the shifting of several peices of furniture. So the night we got home from NC, we began this process and are still in the midst of it.
Pretty soon after moving the furniture around, I effectively finished the guest room. See finished pics below:
The walls were already tan, so no painting required. I spray painted an old orange folding screen from my Papa's house to make the white screened headboard. Super easy. Already had the bedding from Marshalls, picture frames from Home Goods and lamp from Lowes. Of course, the star came from my favorite consignment place in Atlanta and the curtains are IKEA.
Across from the bed is the sitting area. Our guest room didn't have this during our first 6 months in the house. This was actually my "AHA" moment over Christmas that prompted the whole change. This loveseat had been in our living room but that room was so crowded with seating. I also wanted to make this guest room more functional for US to use, so I figured moving some comfy seating in here would be the way to do it. Of course, it is still a crowded room but I like it so much more now. Already had all of the furniture in this picture.
And then my little office nook. A little bit crammed in there but necessary. The board holds my coupons, reminders, etc. And then the coats hanging to the left are using the $10 3-prong hook we got from Target.
All-in-all, the only two things we had to buy for this room were the curtains (about $70 for both panels at IKEA), some white blinds under one of the curtains since it is on the front window of the house ($30), and a hook for coats ($10). Not too bad, considering it took us 7 months to get this room just how we liked it.
But of course, just when everything was settled we would need to change again!! The reason we have all of this furniture in our guest room is because we have been using my friend Rachaels' bedroom furniture in our master the whole time she was living in Ethiopia. She left last July to work for Cherokee over there for 2 years, which was perfect for us. But of course, the Lord's plans are much greater than our own and Rachael met the love of her life in Ethiopia, turns out he is living in Austin, TX and they are getting married this MAY. Read about their incredible story here. So Rachael is coming to pick up her bedroom furniture TODAY which means we are now re-doing our bedroom, along with the guest room (since it will be losing the bed) and our continuous updates of the living room.
To make this happen, we had to buy a dresser ASAP or David's clothes would be on the ground (which he was OK with but I was NOT). We also decided to make a fabric headboard, which I have always wanted to do, rather than buy an actual bed right now. We are still on the hunt for the perfect night stands but have something that will work in the meantime. This is also our last weekend together in Houston before a crazy month of travel, so we had to do everything immediately.
So, now we are making the master really our "own" and changing the guest room into more of a "den" for studying, working etc. It is still guest ready, since the loveseat is a pull-out and we have a very comfortable queen air mattress. And throughout all of these changes, we have been trying to keep one eye on the budget while at the same time buying peices that we want long term and aren't just cheap short term purchases.
